The Winter Solstice Sunrise stone stands in the colorful dawn as the Sun
prepares to rise on the first day of winter, Dec. 22, 2006.
The instant this year when the Sun was most southerly was
7:22 p.m. EST on Dec. 21, 2006, and little change in the Sun's
rising or setting location will occur for the next several days -- hence the solstice, or
'standstill of the Sun'.
