The following photos were taken at the U.Mass. Sunwheel on the morning of election day, Nov. 7, 2000.
The first of 2 flatbed trucks arrived as the Sun rose at 7:30 a.m., carrying 9 of the standing stones, about 28 tons of granite.
The stones are held in a sling and moved from the flatbed truck to the Sunwheel site with the crawler excavator. Allen Williams, owner of Chester Granite Co. where the stones were from, is shown unloading the stones.
Allen Williams unties the sling to unload the next stone, while Tom Adams
of Reellife Productions films the process.
Another stone is unloaded. This is the North standing stone, weighing 8000 pounds.
Allen Williams unties the sling for the North stone. The bottom of the stone is sawed perfectly flat, and the hole in the base will hold a stainless steel pin which will guarantee stability.
The tallest stone is unloaded. This 10' tall beauty will stand toward the Summer Solstice Sunrise direction.
The South stone is unloaded and guided to the ground by Allen Williams and the
flatbed truck driver.
More stones are unloaded.
By 9:30 a.m., the first truck was unloaded and the second flatbed truck arrived,
carrying 5 of the standing stones and all of the foundation slabs, another 28 ton
The granite slabs, which are part of the foundation for each standing stone, are being unloaded by Allen Williams, with Tom Adams looking on.
More standing stones are being unloaded.
More foundation slabs are being unloaded.
